STARBASE Oklahoma is a Department of Defense STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education program designed to inspire 5th-grade students through hands-on, inquiry-based learning. Students participate in exciting lessons on physics, chemistry, engineering design, robotics, coding, and aerospace concepts—all while connecting classroom learning to real-world careers.

Schools are selected and scheduled through coordination with the STARBASE Oklahoma site closest to them during the academic school year, and dates often fill quickly—early scheduling is recommended. Teachers or administrators can contact the site’s program director to request participation and learn about available openings. Priority is often given to Title I schools or those serving underrepresented student populations in STEAM fields.

There is no cost for schools or families to participate! All we ask is that the school provides transportation to and from the STARBASE location and ensures that each student has a sack lunch. STARBASE Oklahoma is fully funded through the Department of Defense, allowing students to experience high-quality STEAM education free of charge.

STARBASE Oklahoma primarily serves 5th-grade students from public, private, and homeschool programs in surrounding communities—not just military families. While STARBASE is a Department of Defense program, it welcomes all students, regardless of military affiliation. Some sites also offer after-school, summer, and special outreach programs for middle and high school students. Check with your local site for eligibility details.

STARBASE Oklahoma operates multiple sites across the state with locations at Fort Sill in Lawton, in Oklahoma City at Oklahoma Military Complex, at the Tulsa Air National Guard Base, and in Weatherford at the Stafford Air & Space Museum. Students attend STARBASE, with their classroom teacher, for a total of 25 hours of instruction, spread over five days. Lessons include hands-on experiments, 3D design projects, coding challenges, flight simulations, and team-based engineering activities—all aligned with Oklahoma Academic Standards.

Students should dress comfortably and appropriately for a learning environment—closed-toe shoes are required. All materials and equipment are provided; students just need to bring their enthusiasm and curiosity!

Absolutely! Classroom teachers attend with their students and often assist during activities. STARBASE also provides teacher resources and follow-up lessons to help extend STEAM learning back into the classroom.
